  1.                             Type Twister

  4.     According to Aldus, Type Twister is an "easy-to-use type
  5. enhancement program for Windows and Macintosh that turns words into
  6. wild, colorful art." The emphasis of this program is to make easily
  7. available to the non-artist special type effects.
  8.  
  9.     Aldus certainly fulfills their mission - this program is easy to
  10. use with virtually no learning curve involved.  The manual is
  11. roughly 30 pages, and perhaps half of that is devoted to
  12. installation and support.  You can certainly be up and running
  13. without reading the manual.
  14.  
  15.     Installation is quick and painless.  There are instructions in
  16. the manual and on the first disk.  The installation screen shows you
  17. how much space Type Twister will occupy, although not how much space
  18. you have free on your hard drive (a minor inconvenience, since the
  19. program only occupies approximately 2 MB hard drive space!).
  20. Installation automatically inserts your registration number.  You
  21. also have the option, at the end, to fill in the registration form
  22. on your screen and then print it out.  If you choose to skip this
  23. phase, as I did, there is also a registration card at the front of
  24. the manual.

  26.     The only problem I had with the installation is the fact that
  27. you cannot do a custom installation.  Type Twister comes with twenty
  28. fonts - you are never given a choice on whether or not you want to
  29. install these fonts.  I can only assume that the fifty pre-set
  30. designs use these fonts.

  32.     Type Twister comes with fifty built-in designs (design buttons).
  33. You can use these as is, or as a starting point for your own
  34. designs.  You may add another fifty custom designs.  You can delete
  35. any custom designs you have added, but you cannot delete the
  36. built-in designs.

  38.     You can change the style, alignment, color, font, shape, and
  39. effect of any design.  Designs may also be rotated, stretched,
  40. condensed, and sheared (skewed).  The combinations are literally
  41. endless.

  43.     There are two ways to get Type Twister designs into your
  44. documents: the first is cutting and pasting.  Where Type Twister
  45. shines, though, is OLE.  Type Twister designs can be embedded into
  46. documents through the Insert Object command on the Edit menu of
  47. those programs that support OLE.  Once embedded, double click on the
  48. Type Twister design to open the program and edit your design.  In
  49. fact, the only way to see your Type Twister designs is by placing
  50. them into a document - you cannot print them from Type Twister.

  52.     What Type Twister does, it does very well.  It could use some
  53. modifications for the serious artist.  You can change the colors of
  54. the type - but only to some pre-selected colors available in Type
  55. Twister.  You cannot modify colors at all - a very large drawback
  56. for the professional designer.

  58.     Text in Type Twister appears with a bounding box - in fact, if
  59. you're familiar with CorelDRAW!, it looks very similar to the
  60. bounding box found when you use the edit envelope option.  It does
  61. not function quite the same, though.  There are eight handles on the
  62. box.  All eight allow you to resize the bounding box.  Two handles -
  63. the upper right and middle right - have another handle coming out of
  64. them.  The outside handle on the upper right allows you to shear or
  65. skew the type by clicking it and dragging.  The middle outside
  66. handle allows you to rotate the type by clicking and dragging.
  67.  
  68.     If the effect you choose contains more than one line, you can
  69. manipulate the color, font, and effect of each line.  You can add
  70. lines to a one line preset design, but the entire design is still
  71. one group.  You can change the color, effect, etc., but those
  72. changes will apply to all the lines in the group.  There is no way
  73. to change a one line design to a design that contains two lines as
  74. distinct groups.

  76.     There are several other software packages similar to Type
  77. Twister, including: Effects Specialist, Font-O-Matic, and
  78. TrueEffect.  Although, none of these packages offer preset designs
  79. or OLE support.
  80.  
  81.     Type Twister is easy to use and learn.  It lacks some features
  82. that a serious graphic designer needs, such as true customizable
  83. colors and kerning.  However, even though I already own several
  84. professional drawing programs, I may very well use Type Twister when
  85. I need a colorful type effect fast.  The support for OLE 1.0 is a
  86. big plus in my book.
